vOnce a volunteer confirms their interest in participating in our different programs and activities we add them to our mailing list and send them and an e-mail every weekend with our weekly schedule, so they can check their availability to participate and confirm when they can join us.

If volunteers need a place to stay, we can arrange for that. Depending on the time they're going to stay and where the price can vary. Our organization doesn't charge for volunteering. We only require for volunteers to make a contribution for transportation since we don't have a vehicle and must travel by cab. There are other needs we invite them to contribute with, but not as fee. I'll enclose the code of conduct for our volunteers as well. If you have any further questions, feel free to contact us and we'll get back to you as soon as possible. Thank you very much. God bless and keep you.

Dear Steve,
Hello! My name is Victoria. I apologize for my delay in getting back to you. I was attending a congress abroad and just got back a few days ago.

Thank you very much for contacting us. We appreciate your interest and concern in our cause as well as for advertising our volunteer work. We don't have rented staff and therefore need all the help we can get. It can be with ideas, time, supplies, funds and/or your presence. Everything we are able to do is thanks to the help of volunteers for our field programs as well as for office work and other tasks.

Following is a brief explanation of what we do in our organization.
We are L.I.F.E., Luchemos por una Infancia Feliz y con Esperanza, (We strive for a childhood with happiness and hope), a non profit organization located in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Our organization is characterized by sponsoring and carrying out different recreational, sports and educational programs in soup kitchens, hospitals and community centers that are already established. We carry out a number of different activities through our different programs.

Through these we promote and offer, Literacy, Recreation, Sports, Health and Hygiene, Nutrition, Primary Medical Assistance, HIV AIDS prevention as well as other STDs prevention, Civic and Social Rights, Human Rights, Women and Children's Rights, Responsible Family Planning, Accident Prevention, Micro Commercial Initiatives, Humanitarian Assistance, Counselling and Advice and Vocational Orientation.

Most of our activities take place in socially excluded neighborhoods in Buenos Aires City and its suburbs, where we work with underprivileged children and their families. We also work in different provinces throughout the country with specific programs assisting to victims of catastrophes, rural communities in isolated areas, indigenous communities and other minority groups.

Such is the case with the Village of Peruti in Misiones, 1500 kms away from Buenos Aires city in the northeast of Argentina. We provide assistance mainly in the areas of health, hygiene, nutrition and disease prevention to a community of nearly 500 people who belong to the guarani ethny. These people live in conditions of extreme poverty. We make trips to the village on a regular basis, once every two months and sometimes even more often.

Our objective is to improve their quality of life and environment offering them a different opportunity since most of the people within these social segments lacked opportunities for a proper development in society.

Education, information and training enable them to value themselves as they should, which is vital for personal growth. Our objective is to provide them with tools and provide resources in order to facilitate a positive change.

We offer tutoring and school support on different subjects for the children and teenagers as well for grown-ups who haven't finished their school. We teach children how to read in our Literacy programs and also have language courses. This is known as the ABC Program.

Twice a week we visit children who are waiting for kidney transplants and must undergo dialisys. They attend a public hospital because their families are usually unemployed and can't attend a private facility. We accompany and support in what ways we can to the children and their families. The name of this program is SMILES and we go early in the morning.

We have a recreational program called HAPPY BIRTHDAY in which we celebrate the birthdays of all the kids who had theirs on the current month. We take party ornaments and supplies, decorate the place, make and take birthday cakes with candles and special decorations, presents assigned according to age and gender wrapped in gift paper with a bow, we play with the children and try to give them what they many times lack within their homes, attention, affection and all our love.

On Saturdays, we meet at our office to go play and spend time with the kids in two different community centers we sponsor, called Ciudad Luz in a slum known as Ciudad Oculta located in mataderos, Buenos Aires city. Through the different games we discover the children's interests, abilities and help them learn what on their own they cannot. This Program is called "La Juegoteca".

There are also HIV Prevention workshops where we teach about Responsible Family Planning, STDs and other related issues...

Friday through Sunday every week plus holidays: Fundraising at Recoleta park right outside the church. There's also other fundraising activities.

On a regular basis there are other tasks to participate in. These go from office work, administrative tasks, translations, fundraising and such. Help for these is also needed and welcome.

Regardless of how much Spanish you know, there's still a lot you can do to help. Besides, you can always learn! The kids are great at teaching you to communicate.

Once a volunteer confirms their interest in participating in our different programs and activities we add them to our mailing list and send them and an e-mail every weekend with our weekly schedule, so they can check their availability to participate and confirm when they can join us.
